![]() ![]() Do I need to declare this one unsolvable? Can I know for sure? That is one HUGE difference between this idea and something like Solitaire. Not knowing if a puzzle can even be solved to begin with means never really knowing whether you're done or not. A number of the best puzzles I have seen are those that seem to be unsolvable, but then when you work on them with great persistence (knowing there is a solution), you arrive at it. I think I would have trouble with a single player game where I end up not knowing whether a puzzle is unsolvable or whether I simply haven't worked at it enough to come up with a solution. You have determined there is no solution, and thus you still have closure and move on. If you can always work out whether a puzzle can be solved or not, then really the puzzle can be "solved", but just on a different level. For this reason you should try and distill it down to the smallest and simplest concept you can, that way an interested game developer can actually make it.įirst, it seems like determining whether a puzzle is solvable or not is a sort of meta-puzzle - a puzzle about the puzzle.
